Barely two years after Kogi state witnessed its last prison break that at the Medium Security Prison in Koton Karfe Local Government Area of the state, a fresh break occurred in the early hours of Monday, September 13, 2021 at the Kabba Correctional Centre, with two soldiers shot dead during the attack on the facility by gunmen.

Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of Zone 8, Lokoja, Ayuba Ede, confirmed the killing of the soldiers who were on road block before the Kabba Corectional Centre in the state.

Over 100 inmates were said to have escaped during the attack.

According to Edeh, the police commissioner in the state and other heads of security agencies have swung into action to do an assessment of the cause of the prison break.

Unlike the recent case, The Koton Kafe case which occured sometime in October 2019, was caused by flooding which led to the collapse of the facility. Over 200 prison inmates were reported to have escaped from the custodial centre upon the collapse.

This was confirmed by an official of the Nigerian Correctional Service, Jafar Ahmed.

It was gathered that the ensuing flood from the torrential rain submerged the prisons and caused destruction to the structures.

According to Ahmed, there were 228 inmates at the centre at the time of the incident who had all escaped from the prison. He however hinted that more than one hundred of the escaped inmates had been rearrested and were being transferred to other prison facilities in the state.
