In the latest of what appears to be a growing trend of attacks on police and other security formations in the South East region of the county, a divisional police headquarters situated in the Ohaukwu Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, was in the early hours of today attacked by unknown gunmen who freed all suspects in detention before setting ablaze parts of the building as well as police operational vehicles packed in the premises.
It was gathered that the gunmen stormed the station about 2am, releasing all the suspects in custody in the police facility while shooting sporadically to scare away police officers on duty. Several policemen were said to have fled the scene with bullet wounds with little or no resistance. No casualty has been recorded so far, while reason for the attack remain unknown as of press time.
Confirming the development, the spokesperson of, Ebonyi State Police Command, Loveth Odah said investigation into the matter was ongoing. She appealed to residents for calm, adding that the police commissioner was on his way to the scene to ascertain the level of damage.
