Emevor, Delta State – The much-anticipated Isoko Nation Unity Table Tennis Tournament, commenced yesterday with an electrifying start at the prestigious Peccan Hotel, Emevor. The tournament, a landmark event aimed at promoting unity and reviving interest in the sport of Table Tennis among the Isoko people, drew representatives from various clans, including Emevor, Iyede, Ellu, Ozoro, Igbuku, Iyede, and Ibrede.
The qualifying matches showcased a high level of enthusiasm and skill, with players eager to make their mark in what many hailed as the rebirth of table tennis in Isoko land. The competition featured intense matches, with players displaying remarkable talent and sportsmanship, after which four players emerge from each clan, to compete for the grand prize of one ,million Naira at the Isoko Unity House, come December 28th, 2024.
One of the participants, Ejiro Adaware Deco, expressed gratitude to the organizers, saying:
“I am delighted to be part of this historic event. It’s refreshing to see table tennis finally receiving the attention it deserves in Isoko land. I’m confident this tournament will pave the way for greater opportunities for our youths”
The organizer, Dr. Palmer Ogheneyole Nathaniel, commended the players for their passion and dedication, promising a fair and transparent contest. In his opening remarks, Dr. Palmer said:
“This tournament is more than just a game; it is a celebration of our shared distinctiveness and culture. We are Isoko people and proudly the best of the human race. This is a further cherishment of our unbroken bond, and as such, let the spirit of unity guide us all as an indivisible ethnic nation.”
Adding that, “as organizers of this contest, we are committed to ensuring fairness and giving every clan an equal opportunity to shine”
The event was graced by spectators from across the Isoko Nation and beyond, who cheered passionately for their clans. The tournament is set to continue on Wednesday and Thursday next week at the Sports complex of the Law Faculty of Delta State University, Oleh Campus.
