Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra state was on Tuesday, held down while a gun dwell lasted between security operatives and gunmen in Ihiala local government area of Anambra State.
At least, one person has been confirmed dead with several others reported injured during the exchange of bullets which lasted over two hours.
According to reports, the incident took place in Odata, where the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) was holding a campaign rally.
A source said Governor Willie Obiano was among those whose vehicles were trapped in the melee. “The Governor’s convoy was stopped for about an hour while gunshots rained throughout the area.”
The source also claimed the possibility of deaths more than the number officially reported.
Another source simply identified as Okoye, said there were six confirmed deaths, while another who gave his name as Chinwuba said there was a possibility of even more deaths. “We know there were more than six people killed,” he said.
Meanwhile, Anambra police spokesman, Ikenga Tochukwu confirmed the incident when contacted. He claimed no police officer was injured, while also hinting security personnel recovered one AK 47 rifle, 30 rounds of ammunition, two magazines, and four vehicles.
“The Operatives of Anambra State Command successfully repelled an attack at Odata Central School, beside St Martins church Ihiala, at about 9:30am,” he said.
“One AK 47 rifle, two magazines with 30 rounds of ammunition, a Lexus 350 jeep, a Rav-4 jeep, a Mercedes Benz, and a Toyota Corolla were among the items recovered.
“Preliminary investigation revealed that when the hoodlums arrived at Odata Central School, they began shooting sporadically.
“However, security operatives working with the police and military were able to successfully repel them.” There were no casualties reported to the police. “In the meantime, normalcy has been restored in the area, and operations to apprehend the fleeing gang members with wounds are ongoing.”
